Hoover Dam was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was referred to as Hoover Dam after President Herbert Hoover passed by bills in Congress during its construction. The Hoover Dam was built to divert water from the Colorado River to various corners of the then-developing southwestern United States. The Hoover Dam holds water in Lake Mead where it is stored so it can be diverted strategically to irrigate local fields.
